I was prescribed steroids which made them go away but once I stopped taking them they came back. I also take benedryl. Nothing seems to work.
Well, my friend, you are not alone. I have suffered from chronic hives for the past several years. Sometimes just one or two in an inconspicuous place - such as a thigh or waistline. Sometimes, like this week (and especially when my immune system is down for sickness) I have mighty flare-ups that keep me home from work - one whole hive covers the entire body :) Just kidding, but it seems that way. I've got them on my neck and hands at the moment (was doing yard work earlier which always flares up my palms - vibration of the mower, using shovels/rakes, etc.)
To this day, no doctor has been able to identify the cause. I live with it. Here's my regiment which actually does work:
1) Plenty of water - keeps your system flushed. More than 8 glasses a day recommended, 10 or 12 or more.
2) Take an over-the-counter antihistamine (not Benadryl, but something stronger and non-drowsy like a generic Zyrtec or Claritin). I take these twice a day - one in the morning and one at night (I know, the directions say once a day but they're for -regular- allergies).
3) Take a Zantac 150 when you take the other. Zantac is called an H2 antihistamine (typically used to treat acid reflux). When taken with an H1 antihistamine - like Ceratidine (Claritin) or something, it gives the H1 a "boost" and makes it even more effective.
4) Eucarine calming cream - honestly, it relieves the itching and I've had hives disappear (or at least reduce) within hours. Get a big bottle. Whenever you have the urge to scratch or "stretch" your palms, rub that on instead. This is the -only- thing I've found to work. (Other creams, like hydrocortizone creams, just make my skin feel "greasy" and do little else - sometimes make it worse).
5) Oatmeal baths - I take 'em at least once a week - I'll be taking one tonight. Keeps the itching down. Aveeno makes a colloidal oatmeal packet you just dump in your bath water. You can also make it into a paste if you're really desperate.
Remember that the antihistamines won't make hives you already have go away! They (hopefully) just reduce the appearance of new ones.
Hives are horrible, believe me I know! I've got them on my neck right now to the point that I can barely wear my shirt. Still, if I wasn't on my "regiment" I'd be in a much worse situation. I'm having a flare-up right now for the yard work and being sick in combination.
Good luck!
Right or wrong, Indiana lawmakers decided in 2005 to limit and track the sales of decongestants, which have a key ingredient used in making methamphetamine. State criminal justice officials are right to now make a significant step toward using the law to help curb meth manufacturing while preventing innocent cold and allergy sufferers from being punished.
While a new initiative to move purchase records of the decongestants from paper to computer is a welcome effort to take full advantage of the law, no one should think that step alone will end meth use and making.
Meth is often homemade and contains a witchs brew of various caustic chemicals. A main component is pseudoephedrine, which is the active ingredient in Sudafed and other decongestants. Versions of popular antihistamines that are combined with decongestants – such as Claritin D or Zyrtec D and their generic equivalents – also contain it.
Lawmakers adopted a law to require pharmacists to record the identification of buyers in an effort to prevent meth makers from going into stores and buying mass quantities of the drug. But because the purchase records are on paper, the records are more of a time-consuming way for law enforcement officials to prove cases against specific individuals than to flag and stop new purchases.
